Nemours Children's Health Cardiac Research Day 2024

Nemours Children's Health Cardiac Research Day 2024 is a scientific activity that celebrates pediatric cardiac research at Nemours.  The primary purpose is to provide an open opportunity for medical students, residents, faculty, and staff to present their research to their colleagues, and to obtain scientific feedback in a friendly environment. ​Our objective is to create an environment where researchers can learn of advancements, discuss the future of research, and ultimately form partnerships that will transform the field of Pediatric Cardiology.

Target Audience

Physicians, nurses, psychologists, and researchers.  Any and all interested Nemours associates.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Describe key steps for building a research infrastructure and available resources at Nemours Children's
  • Recognize the relationship between social deprivation and cardiovascular disease risk burden beginning in youth.
  • Describe the use of crowdsourcing methods to collect research data and how crowdsourcing can be used to co-design interventions.
  • Explain study design and outcomes assessment with N3C database and the risk prediction model for children following COVID-19.
  • Identify the complexities of healthcare systems and how qualitative research can facilitate understanding.
  • Discuss current practices and quality improvement processes for safe patient discharge.
  • Describe how Social Determinants of Health affect clinical Cardiac Health Disease outcomes and processes designed to mitigate these affects.
  • Define the role of risk assessment in cardiac surgery, and the opportunity to customize a risk model for adults with congenital heart disease undergoing cardiac surgery.
  • Discuss trends in national perioperative dexmedetomidine use following congenital cardiac surgery along with signs, risk factors, and management strategies for dexmedetomidine withdrawal in the pediatric ICU setting.
  • Define high risk neonates with congenital heart disease and list alternative catheter-based interventions for palliation.
  • List different aspects of POTS and possible causes of exercise intolerance in POTS along with their therapeutic consequences.
  • Recognize the importance of cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in quantifying cardiac wellness and the value of exercise as a safe and effective treatment to improve future health resilience for children and adolescents with heart disease.
